KENOSHA, WI (WRJN) — Bradford High School in Kenosha went into a temporary hold Wednesday morning after an anonymous tip through the district’s SpeakUp program led to the discovery of a firearm on campus, officials said.

In a letter to parents, the Principal said administrators and the school resource officer acted immediately after receiving the report when the student arrived on campus. The officer located and secured the weapon and took the student into custody without injury.

Staff placed the school on a brief hold while police and administrators ensured everyone’s safety. Classes resumed shortly after. The Kenosha Unified School District praised the quick actions of students and staff.

“We are grateful to the individual who reported the concern and to law enforcement for their swift response,” the statement read. “This situation highlights the importance of ‘see something, say something’ through SpeakUp, Speak Out.”

Families with questions are asked to contact the district.

Wednesday’s discovery comes less than a week after 16-year-old Bradford student Isiah Cooper was shot and killed during an alleged gun sale gone wrong. Two suspects, Carlito Ayala, 19, and Aaron Cumberland, 16, are charged with first-degree intentional homicide and several other felonies in connection with the Feb. 4 shooting.

Both remain in custody on bonds of $2 million and $1 million, respectively, and are expected back in court next week.
