For the first time in history, an American has been elected Pope, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost is the 267th pope, and will be known as Leo XIV. In the coming days, weeks, and months, we will learn more about Pope Leo and what he will bring to the Catholic Church. He has been described as a moderate and a “balancing figure,” suggesting a willingness to find common ground and avoid extremes, rather than leaning strongly towards one side of the spectrum.
He was born in Chicago and studied at Villanova University. He speaks English, Italian, Spanish, French and Portuguese, and he also can read German and Latin.
