BARABOO, Wis. (WRPQ) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is offering free well water screening at this month’s Farm Technology Days, which is being held in Baraboo July 18-20.

People can bring a cup of well water to the DNR’s booth, #719, at the event to be tested for nitrates on the spot.

About 10% of private wells test for high levels of nitrate, and nearly a third of well owners have never tested their water for nitrate, according to the DNR. Infants and pregnant women shouldn’t drink water with high levels of nitrates.

The DNR said it will also have information about the American Rescue Plan Act well grant programs, which makes up to $16,000 available for well owners to replace or re-do their water supplies.

Farm Technology Days has been held in Wisconsin since 1954 and is expected to draw about 40,000 to 50,000 people over the three-day event in Baraboo at the Baraboo Steam and Gas Engine Grounds. Last year’s event was held in Clark County, while next year’s event will be held in Chippewa County. Sauk County also hosted the 1972 Farm Technology Days, and also had a large presence at the 2002 event in neighboring Richland County.
